How We Met

Ryan and Elaine met in a tutorial for their English class during their first year at Simon Fraser University. Ryan, a thoughtful and somewhat reserved computer science major, found his usual seat near the back. Elaine, on the other hand, was a vibrant and enthusiastic linguistics major. Their paths might have remained parallel if not for a group project assigned by their tutor. Ryan, initially hesitant, found himself gradually drawn to Elaine's infectious enthusiasm and energy. What started as academic collaboration quickly evolved into genuine friendship. They discovered shared interests, from playing Minecraft and League of Legends to drinking bubble tea and going on food adventures. By the end of their second semester together, Ryan and Elaine had become inseparable, their bond growing stronger with each passing day. Their meeting in that English tutorial was the beginning of a beautiful story, one that neither had anticipated but both were grateful for.

The Proposal

Elaine had organized a picnic for Ryan's birthday, inviting their friends to celebrate the occasion at the rose garden on Burnaby Mountain. Little did she know, Ryan had a surprise of his own. However, as often happens with the best-laid plans, one friend wandered a bit too close to get the perfect shot, causing Ryan's heart to race with anxiety. The timing wasn't perfect—Eric hadn't even arrived yet—but Ryan couldn't wait any longer. Enchanted by the garden’s roses, Elaine snapped photos, oblivious to Ryan guiding her to the center. With his voice trembling with emotion, Ryan reminded her how she had repeatedly asked what he wanted for his birthday. Elaine, confused and unaware of what was about to happen, acknowledged his words. Reminiscing about their eight wonderful years together, Ryan then dropped to one knee and revealed a small, elegant ring box. Opening it, he gazed up at her and said, “All I want for my birthday is you.” Overcome with joy, tears welled in Elaine’s eyes as she nodded eagerly. Cheers erupted from their friends and cousins, capturing the heartfelt proposal amid the garden’s blooms—a beautiful beginning to their forever.

Half robot, half dramatic-existential-crisis, and fully Elaine's favourite; I'm now happily conceding this highly coveted position to Ryan, who won my blessings through the smitten look on his face every time he gazes at Elaine. Seeing that look reminds me of how Elaine's bubbly energy won me over when we first met through mutual friend Tiger at the beginning of high school, Tiger&Co fading into the backdrop as NPCs the moment Elaine smiled at me. She's the Sailor Moon to my Luna, and joining the board game nights she hosts is one of my favourite parts of adulthood so far. When I'm not actively being the fifth wheel in our friend group consisting of two couples, I can be found chronically online, fangirling over K-Pop, anime, and MBTI. BoT V2.5 Wedding Mode: ON!

Everyone should have that someone who you can trust and rely on. Looking back I feel like me finding Ryan seems like a sheer coincidence. I am a coin flip between introverted and extroverted, but for some reason on that day everything fell into place. On the bus heading home from school we happened to sit next to each other, I happened to be slightly more extroverted, and we happened to have some common interests. The short chat we shared made me realize in that moment Ryan and I could possibly become friends, little to my knowledge he completed a part of the missing puzzle in my life, and I am ecstatic Elaine completed the bigger piece in his life. It is truly a great honour to be named Ryan’s best man at his wedding.

I'm Elaine's younger cousin. I've known her since birth and I've grown up seeing her everyday. Being 7 years older than me, I've viewed her as an older sister and a role model (in addition to my own true blood older sister), given the more life experiences she's had and the load of responsibility she was always given. I remember first hearing about the secret "Ryan" and the built-up anticipation when we knew he was going to be introduced to the family. I quickly learnt what a great partner he could be to Elaine, being the guy with lots of insight and knowledge (as reflected by his responses to the partner test we gave him). It was relieving to know that he's a person that could take care of her and someone she could rely on so that she wouldn't have to play mama bear 24/7. If I were a Disney character, I'd want to be Winnie the Pooh.

I'm Ryan's little brother Jack. When I met Elaine, she instantly won me over because when they came back home, they occasionally brought snacks. I’m extremely glad they found each other, as they fit together perfectly, seemingly never apart. Ryan's always been one of my treasured people, countless of my happiest memories were just us goofing around in Minecraft together at 5am to avoid our parent's strict schedule. He’s been a role model for me in several different ways, leading me to steal several hobbies and even my major from him (and our dad). I know this ceremony only brings out even more of the amazing couple they already are.

I'm Susan, one of Elaine's many cousins. If I were a Disney character, I'd want to be Belle, but I'm probably Cogsworth. I have no recollection of how I met Elaine since I've known her since the womb and... I also don't remember how I met Ryan. But I do recall knowing him as a beverage before learning his name and feeling very skeptical that some university guy was dating one of the most influential role models in my life. To make Ryan prove his worth, the other cousins and I wrote a 100-question boyfriend test and demanded that he fill it out. I began to overcome my doubt of him when he earnestly answered every single prompt. Then he fixed my dust-ridden, broken laptop. Later, he agreed to be my senior project mentor despite receiving ZERO updates from me about said project. Over the years, Ryan has patiently put up with my shenanigans. While part of me believes that no one could truly deserve Elaine, I know that someone who brings so much comfort, security, and happiness to her is worthy enough to spend the rest of their life with her. Ryan matches Elaine's infectious enthusiasm with quiet sincerity. Together, they're perfect.

Hello, I’m Elaine’s brother and Ryan’s future brother-in-law. If I’m honest, when I first met Ryan, I didn’t like him, not because he’s a bad guy and super lazy, but he was taking my sister away from me. It’s funny because if you knew us, we always bickered and fought over every little thing, but to me it felt like she was helping me build a thick layer of skin. My favourite memory of us was when we were kids, she was drawing comics, and she showed them to me, but little did I know she taught me my first swear word (I was in grade 3 btw). I thought she was so cool. Anyways as time went by she has already told me a lot about them (yes I know a lot Ryan :P) I guess I came to like him because he was the only one to stay with her through the darkest times and make her genuinely happy and smile, and I thought to myself “hey Ryan’s not too bad I guess” and Ryan has finally made Elaine find her peace and make her feel safe. I guess in a loving way I can say that I don’t have to worry about kicking his ass anymore #littlebrotherduties

I've known Ryan since the era of everyone playing the Pokemon trading card incorrectly, Elementary school. That being said we actually became friends in High school when we started playing League of Legends together. Ryan was so patient, encouraging, and helpful while I was learning and these are some of the traits that make him a wonderful friend. I have lots of great memories from over the years, however my favourite memory is when he introduced me to Elaine. They were both just so utterly enamoured with each other from the start and to be granted the privilege of watching them grow together as a team has been an overwhelming honour. My favourite Disney movie? Lilo and Sitch.

Watching your friend grow up is hard. From being that shy, dorky kid to getting married. Being a year older than Ryan, it was an unlikely friendship to happen back in 2012 when he was in grade 9 and I was in grade 10. Ryan was in my Mandarin class, him being smart and all doing a grade higher. I never said a word to him though. It wasn’t until that summer when we had summer school for Math 11 he was sitting all alone. I recognized him, we talked, played some League of Legends, and the rest was history. Can’t wait to be a part of all the new wonderful memories to be made along the way with Ryan and Elaine in their next step in life together. Favourite Disney Movie? Atlantis: The Lost Empire

As Elaine’s younger cousin, I’ve always looked up to her, she’s been such an amazing role model in so many ways. Now that Elaine and Ryan are officially tying the knot. It’s been amazing to watch their relationship grow, and now they’re ready to start this new chapter together. Elaine has always brought so much fun and energy into our lives, and it’s clear that Ryan complements her perfectly. I remember the first time meeting Ryan he was kind and introduced himself to everyone. Together, they make a wonderful pair, and I am excited to see what the future holds for them as husband and wife. A life filled with love, laughter, and happily ever after.

I met both Ryan and Elaine coming right out of college, through a mutual friend. we hit it off instantly and have been great friends ever since. We bonded through them teaching me League of Legends, Elaine was just starting out as well so we were both learning how to play together. I remember having late nights watching Disney Movies, and binge watching Harry potter together while Elaine grilled me on facts about the series. I genuinely love both Elaine and Ryan with all my heart and I wish them all the best, I know Ryan will take the best care of Elaine, and Elaine will always be there for Ryan no matter what. I'll always cherish the memories we've had as friends, and I can't wait to make more (including the wedding!!) P.S, my favorite Disney movie is frozen, but Moana is a close competitor
